The Economic Committee Andhra Pradesh Organized a Seminar on the present day hot topic, “The Economics of Happiness” on 14”April, 2018 at Kamala Nehru Polytechnic for Women, Exhibition Grounds. The Guest Speaker, Dr. (Col.) V.P.Singh, Professor of Medicine, Bharathi Vidyapeeth Medical College, Pune spoke on the topic “Economics of Happiness”. He said the Economics for long time has been associated with the concept of Gross National Product and Gross Domestic Product, so much so that increases in three Indices and that of Per Capita Income have become guiding principles of Planning. Over the last few decades, it is being realized that these parameters do not necessarily translate into well being and happiness of citizen. On the contrary, they have caused social, emotional and ecological imbalances. Natural resources have been exploited and we are heading towards non- sustainable development. In these scenario the concept of gross national happiness, other indicators of well being as outlined by U.N. and a variety of Psycho-social elements need to be incorporated in economic Planning. The basic Thrust should shift from creating infrastructure and wealth for creating happiness and well being in larger parts of the population.
